FINALLY LEAVING NILAND, CA, ON THE WAY TO SUMMER FUN

Well, we finally left our winter home in sunny desert Ca for a summer trip up to northern  Ca and Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Nevada.  We were about to start on Sunday April 27, however, as fate would have it our cargo trailer tire was low and it turned out to be a bad valve stem.  So Joel had to change the tire, lucky we keep an extra.  We were about an hour and a half later than we thought we would be.  On to Bakersfield Ca where we will spend the night.  Suddenly our inside generator start switch will not work and Joel had to put it on at the generator itself.  One thing on our to fix list.  The road going up was not too bad, 215 was okay but not Ca 395, road construction and some of the worst bumps we had ever gone over, and we paid for it.  The frame of our bedroom cabinet holding our new tv pulled away from the cabinet(it was only in with staples), and took the tv with it.  Unfortunately, the coax on the tv was broken away from the pc board so the tv is toast.  Today we went to Walmart and got a real nice tv and in a couple of days a mobile guy will be coming to put back the cabinet (this time with screws).  Also our dash ac stopped working.  We got out fridge fixed the day before we left.  We waited for three months till the tech told us we had to wait a while for a part.  We called Dometic and they overnighted the part to us.  I don't think they wanted to do the job, however they came out on Saturday and now we have rock hard ice cream again.  There is always something going on here.  Well to get to Pismo Beach which is our destination we had to go on Highway 166, switchbacks and steep mountains but Joel did a great job driving.  We are staying in a very nice park called Pismo Sands about 2 miles from the beach.  We have already found lots of restaurants, yippee, and shopping areas.  We have car shows to go to soon.  The weather is beautiful and we are experiencing a heat wave here, usually it would be in the 70's but in the high 80's today.  It would be nice to open the windows for a while.  We will be here for 10 days and will visit the Danish village of Solvang, and of course the beach area.  Just to relax for a while, I will take pics for the next post.

STILL IN NILAND

Well, today we took a short trip to Joshua National Park.  This is a beautiful park which encompasses two different deserts.  The Colorado Desert which is where we are, and the Mohave Desert.  The only way you can tell where these two deserts intersect is by the vegetation in them.

We drove in on Cottonwood side and that was the Colorado.  Lots of Ocatillo trees, and cholla cactus.  The cholla are also known as the jumping cactus, they have a way of getting onto jackets, other clothing, animals and us.  They were in bloom because of a recent downpour and it was really a sight to see.  We walked along this trail in this cactus garden full of them.  There were literally about a thousand plants.  We also saw lots of Ocatillo trees which are tall and resemble twigs with fuzzy red blooms which look like catipillars.  Some of the trunks were green and some were brown.  The pictures tell the story.

There are also loads of rock formations in the park, and one of them looked like the head of a pig.  See if you agree.  The Mohave Desert side is where the Joshua Trees are located.  These trees look like tall Yucca Plants.

In the Cottonwood section of the park the Cahuilla Indians were.  They used the spring at Cottonwood Springs area and left behind mortars, clay pots or ollas.  They were there for centuries.

We left the park and headed into the town of Twenty Nine Palms.  We had lunch in a nice rib joint.  Joel had great babybackback ribs and I had beef brisket.  The French fries were handcut and delicious.  We had sweet tea, which we have not had since we were south.  Then we went thru a couple of rustic towns, Yucca Valley and Morongo Valley, then to Palm Desert and made our way back home.  A beautiful day.  Enjoy the photos.

STILL HANGIN OUT IN NILAND

Well, so much has been going on.  Last week Joel and I went to Culver City, Ca, near los angeles to see a taping of the "wheel of fortune show".  This rv park had a chartered bus and we left in a beautiful new prevost bus (with a bathroom) yippee at 9am.  We ate lunch on the bus and got to Sony Studios.  Across the street is Columbia Pictures.  It used to be MGM pictures.  We took a tour of Sony Studio, see the cute pics.  Then we went to see the show.  Very regimented for the audience, they hold up cards when we should applaud and then to be very quiet.  Then Vanna and Pat Sajak came out.  They greeted the audience.  They have been doing this show since 1979.  Vanna wears gorgeous designer gowns and has never worn the same one twice.  We had to sit through 3 tapings.  They only work 2 days a week and tape 6 shows.  Then it happened to be the 6,000th show so they had a cake and all the crew was taking pictures, so we were stuck there until it was finished.  Then back on the bus to go for dinner.  The trip there was 3 hours and the temperature was 10 degrees cooler and had just stopped raining.  We stopped at a Homestyle Buffet and so many people were on line, so joel and I walked across the street to Del Taco.  We didn't get home till 11:30pm.  We were exhausted.

Well, last Saturday we went to a car show at a mall in Palm Desert, which is about an hour north of us.  It has lots of golf courses, so I got to see something green.  It was cooler and it rained a little but was very nice.  We went to a town café across the street for lunch and joel had a gyro and he loved it.  It had been a while since he has had greek food.  We left about 3:30 and went to the pet store, and then to the evil empire, Walmart for shopping.  We didn't get home till 9pm.  I can hardly wait till we move the clocks ahead this coming weekend.  Then maybe if we go somewhere we can come home in the daylight.  But on to more stuff.

On Wed. Joel went out with the atv'rs to a place called East Jesus.  Sounds weird right, yes it is.  It is far out in the desert near Slab City, if you have been reading this blog you saw pics of slab city.  It was an old army base and lots of folks boondock there, no water, electric or sewer.  Good for them, we are used to the good life and facilities.  Well anyway near there in the desert is an area called east jesus where artists of all kinds live and make wild and interesting projects out of recycled stuff.  Look at these cool pics.  Today, because of me surfing around on the net I messed up my computer, but here on mon. and thurs. they have people to fix it for you for free, so I got fixed, and came home  to find the fridge repairman.  I have been waiting for him for 3 weeks, because my freezer has ice and the fans are not working, however he had to take it out to work on it and because of the leak we had it damaged the wood floor under it, so we have to wait till next week when he will bring some plywood, and fix it.  We are so far in the desert only 1 mobile rv tech place comes out and he has lots of other work, so we wait.  The fridge is still working so we are lucky.

Tomorrow I hope to go into El Centro which is about an hour south to the flooring store to pick out new flooring and carpet.  We had new flooring put in a year and a half ago but the leak ruined it.  We also are going to get wood blinds for the coach and get rid of all the wood and sun faded upholstery valances.  We are going to get 2 new kitchen chairs too.  Make the place light and bright with a tropical theme.

Well, today just came from the pool where I watched Joel playing volleyball.  It is a very serious sport here, this water volleyball, and there are older folks playing and they are very competitive and it is all in fun.  While I waited for him I went over to the karaoke and did a song.  Then came home and made some great chicken marsala, home fried potatoes and salad.  Oh, comfort food.   Well here come the pictures.  Enjoy

JANUARY 22, STILL IN NILAND

Well, lots going on since my last post.  Have lost about 4 lbs. due to not eating at pot lucks and buffets.  We will see how long that will last.  Bought some 3 lb weights to use at our exercise class.  They make a lot of difference.  Read a couple of books and did a few jigsaw puzzles, joel has had a cold for the last 3 weeks and it is gone now.  We went into Indio last Sunday and went to Petco for cat food and then to Winco, sort of a big box grocery store like Cosco, but they didn't have the cereal that Joel likes.  We then went to the Augustine Casino and had lunch and I had the best bbq brisquet, mashed taters and broccoli and corn bread.  It was really good.  Joel had the French dip sandwich and it and the fries were nothing special.  We then went the 35 miles back to the park.  It is getting easier to make these trips now.  I am in rehersal for "Gilligans Island", I play the movie star Ginger and I will be singing "Its no business like show business".  Last nite we had talent night and the place was packed with people.  I sang an Anne Murray number and got loads of compliments, and these people thought all I could do was rock and roll.  Well, I took the plunge and got a new hairstyle and color and I love it, and Joel does too.  It is pretty short, and lots of blond streaks.  I have been thinking about doing it for a long time and there is no time like the present.  I am no spring chicken you know.  Joel is back to playing tennis in the mornings.  Lots of new people coming in all the time.  We are going in Feb. to  a taping of the wheel of fortune show, tour of Sony studio and dinner out.  We will be with 48 other people and leaves here from the park.  We are looking forward to that.  Also foyspa our park is having a special day on Feb. 15, parade, we are decorating our car the the theme is tropical destinations.  Also there will be Can am games, the Canadians against the americans, ha ha.  Then there will be our show.  It will be lots of fun.  In March there is a variety show and Joel and I will both be doing skits in that one.  Always something to look forward to at this rv park.  So glad we found it.  Speak to you soon.

STILL HERE IN FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH RV PARK   Dec. 30, 2013

It is hard to believe that we are here for over two  months already.  We are so busy most days  that we don't know what day it is.  But here we are and tomorrow is New Years Eve.  We are going to a dance here at the park to celebrate, with music and dinner.  I hope I can find something to wear that fits me, that is a problem right now.  After all the eating out, pot lucks, and just plain laziness in the last year and a half since I retired I have put on more lbs.  I must get them off, so I joined a stretch and strengthen class three days a week here.  It is an hour and a half class and we stretch and use weights and  lots of exercises for all areas of the body.  The first day I went, I couldn't move the next day, today was my 3rd class and I feel much better.  Today we had 58 people in the class and 12 of them were men.  I walk to the class and that is about a 1/4 mile uphill so that helps too.  I am bound and determined to wear my old clothes.  I am eating less too and not much bread, which is my downfall.  Joel is in very good shape, and he walks a lot and goes to the class too.

On new years day we are invited to a Tamale Party (oh no more food) and I will try to be good, but after that,  oh no on Saturday is the all you can eat pancake breakfast.  I will start cutting back next week I promise.

I got rave reviews on my performance in the xmas play and today went to the drama club to start rehersals for our next show.  It will be in February and is "Gilligans Island" the musical.  It is a funny show and lots of songs.  I will have the part of the movie star, hm hm.  Looking forward to strutting my stuff on stage, got to get into some slinky dresses.  I got my hair done last week and goodbye brown, and hello blond streaks.  Everyone didn't even know who I was and I got lots of compliments from the men and women alike.

I am going to try and play paddle tennis, which is a smaller court tennis, with doubles.  I hope it doesn't conflict with my ping pong club.  Joel and I love to play ping pong.  He plays regular tennis almost every morning from 7-9 am.  I am still rolling over in bed at that time.  I am also going to go to the water zumba classes.  That will be a lot of fun.  Anything with music in it I love.

Well, want to wish everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

STILL IN NILAND, FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH RV PARK

Isn't it funny how time flies when you are having fun.  Here it is the 17th of December and we have been doing so much since we came here on Oct. 29th.  Our activities keep us pretty busy, the ping pong club, tennis, atv-ing, drama club, talent nite, karaoke, and of course all the pot luck dinners which keep beckoning to me.

Tonight we are going to the Howl, a once a month activity sponsored by the Atv club, we roast hot dogs, everyone brings a covered dish and coffee and tea are served.  After which we sit around and gab and admire the gorgeous sunset.  Then after that I am singing a song in the xmas show tonight and I am wearing my elf costume for it.  Then next Sunday is our xmas pageant and I have a lead part in that.

Last Sunday, joel and I took a ride to box canyon, which is about 35 minutes away, you will enjoy the pics I took of it.  It is a very popular hiking area and dirt bike and atv riding mountainous area.  Afterwards we got off at the chiraco summit, an exit  off I-10.  We had lunch at a cute café, walked around at an old fashioned gas station, and then walked over into the George Patton Museum and learned a lot about how he had a huge military training camp right near us.  Took some pics there too.

Next week is the xmas feast and lots of pot lucks, oh my, I guess I will have to start my diet after the new year.

Last Friday night we went with our neighbors to celebrate a birthday in Indio at the Augustine Casino, which was having a seafood buffet.  Before we went there we went to a small rv show and looked at lots of diesel pushers and I liked mine better.  Joel was glad to hear that.  Then we went to the buffet and Joel went to look at the food.  He never makes a big deal over food but he came back and said it looked awesome.  You could order off the menu too but when I saw the buffet, we all had the buffet.  I won't tell you how much I ate, it was sort of like feeding time at the zoo, according to Joel.  There were lobster tails, king crab legs, fresh oysters, every kind of shrimp know, lobster ravioli, filet mignon in wine sauce, all the usual salads and veggies and for desert, well I will tell you that I topped off my meal with 2 ice cream bon bons, chocolate cheesecake, and crème brulee.  All of this for $27.95, we will be sure to go back.  It was a great evening.   I was glad to read your post and was sad you were not coming here, but I guess you will have a great time in  Florida, maybe next year you can make it out here.  Guaranteed a great time at the Fountain of Youth Spa.   Want to wish you, Ron, and little boy a wonderful xmas and happy new year.  Look forward to hearing from you.  Sincerely, Esta and Joel

Dec. 10, 2013 FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH SPA RV PARK IN NILAND CA

Had a nice thanksgiving, ate far too much and had a new treat, a corn bake, delicious.  The people in this park make the best potluck foods.  I will have to wait till after the holidays to lose some weight so that my clothes will fit me again.  The weather has changed to real chilly,  50's during the day but hot sun so it is really tolerable.  The nights are in the forties but our heat pump keeps us nice and warm.  It if gets much colder we will have to turn on the furnace.  Yesterday I was cooking using the electric fry pan and the toaster oven and then put on a small electric heater in the kitchen area just to warm us up a bit.  Bad move, I blew a breaker somewhere in the coach, because of all the heating appliances.  No tv, no outlets, no fridge, oh dear.  We checked the breakers in the bedroom and they were all ok, the gfi in the bathroom was ok too, so we checked the fuses and ok too.  Then Joel went out to the bay with the inverter and lo and behold the inverter has a breaker too and it had popped.  One click and we were good to go again.  We learned a valuable lesson , too many heated appliances.  It seems the kitchen works off  the inverter, duh, didn't know that until now.  Glad we learned another interesting bit of info about our coach.  I guess all Monaco and holiday rambler coaches are made like that.  Today we stuck around the coach and our neighbors came in and visited us.  I think the main reason they come is to play with our cat Peanut.  They used to have cats and they love them.  Then we went to the Café for dinner tonight.  I got my days mixed up and thought the special for tonight was Pork Loin.  Tonight was liver and onions which I love, but Joel unfortunately doesn't love it that much so he had fried shrimp.  It was good not to have to cook all the time.  I have been taking advantage of the fresh market that comes here two mornings a week and have been buying lots of fresh veggies.  I now make sautéed spinach and squash and eggplant, and I will be branching out into brussel sprouts this weekend.  I have been putting more effort into my cooking and it has been beginning to show.  I and Joel are eating a healthier menu, lots of fruits and veggies and whole grains.  Well, the weather man said we will be warming up this weekend.  Lots of activities coming up for xmas, the parade, the xmas pageant which I have a very big part in, xmas singing show, I also have a song, ping pong pot luck dinner, and other pot luck and block parties.  Something is always going on around here.  Well, y'all stay warm and will post again soon.
